Big Snow by Jonathan Bean

Gregor the Giraffe
Is it too early to start talking about snow? Jonathan Bean’s Big Snow just arrived at the library and I can’t stop thinking about that wonderful white stuff! David is a young boy at home, waiting for a snow storm to come. “When will it snow? How much snow will there be?” he keeps asking his mom. He tries to distract himself with chores. Baking cookies, the flour reminds him of snow. Making his bed, the cool white sheets become a soft, snowy landscape. Soon enough he can’t resist running outside to check the weather.

Do you ever feel that certain electricity in the air when a storm is coming? Well, that’s just how I felt reading this book. Big Snow perfectly captures that tingly sense of anticipation. Moreover, I loved the cozy indoor scenes between David and his family: baking cookies, napping, and eating dinner all safe and warm while the world outside goes white.

Puffin Peter by Petr Horacek

Max the Meerkat
After a big storm, Puffin Peter is lost at sea! How will he find his way back to his best friend Paul? Peter sets off to find his friend with help from a friendly blue whale.  Together they swim the ocean looking for Paul, meeting lots of feathered friends along the way. You can’t go wrong with this sweet, simple story with important lessons about friendship and helping others.  The bright and beautiful illustrations really make this title stand out. Petr Horacek continues to be one of my favorite authors and illustrators!
